Design Committee
Purpose: The Design Committee's goal is to improve the appearances of, and maximize the uses of downtown Mundelein's buildings, streetscapes, parking, public areas and open spaces, by ensuring cooperative planning, the use of quality materials, proper maintenance and creative vision.
Current/Past Activities:
Design Guidelines
- The Design Committee established basic Design Guidelines to apply to projects financed by the MainStreet Facade Loan Program. These are still in effect for new projects, but the Guidelines should be reviewed & modified as part of the revision of the Downtown Comprehensive Plan.
Design Review
- The Design Committee is called upon to review, make recommendations, and assure compliance of projects in the Loan Program. The Village of Mundelein's Board & Staff, Building Dept., Appearance Review Commission and Plan Commission have been proactive in including MainStreet in the process of reviewing any downtown projects submitted for their approval, to be sure MainStreet concepts are incorporated into new construction, renovations, site plans and sign design.
Design Education
- The Design Committee has hosted several speakers and workshops to educate business people & property owners about "MainStreet-friendly" design concepts, architecture, etc. More proactive sessions should be planned. We also assisted as business liaison during Streetscape Improvement stages.
Participate in Downtown Comprehensive Planning
- MainStreet has played a key role in past planning of downtown's future by the Village of Mundelein, including the Downtown Comprehensive Plan of 1997 and subsequent Streetscape Improvement Design & Phases. MainStreet offers the views of the public & business community, provides venues & opportunities for input, and can reach out to the vast MainStreet network for expertise.
Adopt-A Highway
- The Design Committee has lead the periodic voluntary highway clean-up along Route. 176 in Mundelein, from the eastern Village entryway sign, west to Prairie Ave. Volunteers are sought to help, normally on a weekend morning.
